Dedicated public space since Mexican rule, Balboa Park is a large, urban greenscape with over 17 museums, a panoply of rotating food vendors, a community of local artists, and home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. You can easily spend a whole day in the park, and an evening afterwards in any of the vibrant surrounding neighborhoods of Hillcrest (where Pat & Lauren first lived!), North Park, or South Park.
A California classic, Belmont Park is a boardwalk amusement park on the beach. It features a small wooden roller coaster, carousel, and other classic rides. There is also mini-golf, an Escape Room that suits smaller parties (2-6), zipline, a rock-climbing wall, and more. Pat and Lauren had their engagement photos done here (and in Torrey Pines), and it's one of their favorite places to take visitors.
The park abuts Mission Beach, a two-mile long beautiful stretch of perfect sand and water. If you are interested in trying out a surfing lesson or just playing in the waves, this is a great place to go. These is also a wide walking / riding path that runs the length of the beach; a great place to rent a beach cruiser bike or some skates and go for a roll.
There are many great beaches all around the San Diego area.
Across the street is Fisherman's Landing, a marina area with a bunch of food options and a nice view of boats and the water. We recommend:
A little bit further is the Point Loma Village area. There's some nice food options here as well, but we'll highlight two options if you're looking for a place to post up, enjoy some beverages, and just relax:
Decommissioned barracks, Liberty Station is an enormous space with everything from restaurants, grocery stores, event spaces, artist studios, startups, and more. A cool place to walk around and a great place to support some local artists and small businesses.
If you're looking to eat out somewhere nicer, you will almost certainly need to make reservations in advance. Pretty much everywhere in San Diego has a nice outdoor dining option, and built-in heaters just in case it is a chilly night. There are many rooftop options as well, but competition can be pretty stiff for those seats on weekends. We recommend leaning into the SoCal lifestyle and being outdoors whenever possible :).
After dinner, San Diego has a healthy speakeasy scene, as well as just fun regular bars. Here's a few you may want to check out (again, might need to reach out in advance for the speakeasys).
Haven and Pat met in 2007 as members of the Michigan Men's Crew team. A part of each other's lives for fifteen years, there's probably no one outside of Pat's family he's spent more time with.
Jill is Lauren's best friend. They met through Alpha Delta Pi at the University of Michigan in 2007. Late nights studying developed into a great friendship!
Pat and Brad connected† in grad school and
traveled through their PhD together. They share a love of roller
coasters, sports, beer, and (in their way) school.
†They were in the same class as
freshman, and while both remember the class of just 20 people,
somehow they don't remember each other from then!
Lindsay and Lauren met during PGY-1 pharmacy residency in Indianapolis. Using their different strengths, they supported each other through that rigorous year of training and stay in touch through a shared guilty pleasure of watching Riverdale.
Noah and Pat met as undergraduates at Michigan and have since been through two graduate degrees together. Noah has (literally) taken Pat around the world and is Pat's gold standard for a kind and impact-oriented life.
Lauren met Kallie during pharmacy school at the University of Michigan. They used to study and watch Dr. Who at Kallie's apartment.
Voted “most-likely to take an impromptu nap on the lounge couch at the wedding,” David and Pat lived together in grad school and have since been found cavorting around Michigan sporting events.
Lauren met Erin through Erin's husband Jacob. They became friends over numerous cottage weekends and visits to Northern Michigan.
Zakir and Pat met in graduate school, where Zakir redefined everyone's view of Iowans. Most often found together in the kitchen, few things bring them greater joy than new, interesting produce or spice and someday a trip to the country it came from.
Ashley is Lauren's childhood nemesis. Ashley and Lauren competed against each other in artistic roller skating. They reconnected in St. Louis when Lauren was completing PGY2 and Ashley was doing research for her PhD.
Steve is Pat's brother. People insist they look alike, but Pat cannot ever see past all that hair. Steve has been a role model, an intellectual aspiration, and a culinary inspiration for all of Pat's life.
Julie is Pat's sister. Lauren met Julie at one of Pat's infamous Turducken dinners in Ann Arbor. They share a love chemistry and a dislike of mushrooms.
Dan is Lauren's big brother, a fellow engineer, and a fellow Wolverine. Pat and Dan share a love of city life and enjoy finding great food and drinks wherever they are to be found.
Bill is Jill's (Matron of Honor) husband. Pat had the immense pleasure of officiating their wedding. Pat and Lauren love the symmetry of closing the loop on our respective relationships and helping Bill reach his long-promised sacerdotal aims.
We have a registry on The Knot.
